The IIHF has suspended Russian forward Valeri Nichushkin one game for a hit from behind during Russia's 4-1 loss to Canada at the World Junior Championship in Ufa, Russia on Monday. American defenceman Shayne Gostisbehere was also suspended for one game for a stick infraction against Slovakia during Monday's 9-3 win by the United States.
The decision to suspend Nichushkin came after the IIHF Disciplinary Panel reviewed his hit on Canada's Tyler Wotherspoon. Nichushkin hit Wotherspoon directly in the back and drove the Canadian player's head into the boards and glass.
Nichushkin was assessed a major penalty and a game misconduct on the play. Wotherspoon was forced to leave the game but was able to return.
According to a IIHF press release, the Panel deemed Nichushkin's actions "reckless" and the decision to suspend the Russian forward was unanimous.
The same was said for the decision against Gostisbehere, who was suspended for driving his stick forcefully between the legs of Slovakia's Matus Matis, striking striking him in the groin area. Matis was injured on the play, but he did return to the game.
Gostisbehere was assessed a major penalty plus game misconduct for the foul.
