The Toronto Maple Leafs announced on Thursday that Morgan Rielly is going to remain with the team after he plays his ninth game with the club.
General manager Dave Nonis took Rielly aside before practice to give him the good news.
Rielly has four assists in eight games for the Maple Leafs this season. As with all players on three-year entry level contracts, a full season of the deal kicks in when a player skates in his 10th game.
The 19-year-old was Toronto's first-round pick (fifth overall) in the 2012 Draft.
Joffrey Lupul left practice early to receive X-rays after taking a shot off the foot.
Nik Kulemin (ankle) and Mark Fraser (knee) skated before practice with the team's strength and conditioning coach. It's the first time Fraser was on the ice since his injury. Kulemin skated briefly on his own on Wednesday. Fraser McLaren has been cleared to play on Friday.
Fraser and Kulemin are expected to make upcoming Western road trip but are not likely to play.
James Reimer also had been battling a flu, which is likely why Jonathan Bernier made consecutive starts. Has had no symptoms from the collision with Josh Leivo last week.
