Jose Bautista missed the Toronto Blue Jays' Monday night home game against the Chicago White Sox with back spasms.
The news first broke when the Jays released their line-up for Monday night via the team's official Twitter account with Bautista's name absent from the order.
Mark DeRosa started at third base, while Emilio Bonifacio played right. Adam Lind got the start as designated hitter.
Blue Jays general manager Alex Anthopoulos said he expects Bautista to return to the line-up on Tuesday.
Bautista has played the last two games at third base after an ankle sprain to Jays shortstop Jose Reyes forced a shuffle in the team's defensive alignment. He has also appeared as the team's designated hitter on two occasions this season.
Bautista has already missed time in 2013, sitting out the entirety of the Blue Jays' April 5-7 series against the Boston Red Sox with an ankle injury.
The 32-year-old has hit three home runs and driven in six runs in nine games played so far in 2013.
