ST. JOHN'S, N.L. -- Greg Scott quickly made amends for taking a penalty in overtime and potentially costing his team the game.

Scott scored 2:20 into OT shortly after emerging from the penalty box as the Toronto Marlies defeated the St. John's IceCaps 3-2 in American Hockey League action Friday night.

Scott took a feed from Mike Zigomanis and took advantage of the open ice.

"They kind of backed off, I faked a shot and then just put my head down and shot it," said Scott. "Next thing I know, I see (Mike) Komisarek right there and I give him a hug."

Scott knew the penalty was inevitable after making contact with goalie Mark Dekanich.

"I bumped the goalie there and I knew right away I was going to the box. We had a good PK and I actually felt pretty comfortable in there thinking we could kill it off."

Ryan Lasch and Jesse Blacker also scored for Toronto (39-21-9).

St. John's (29-33-6) had goals from Kael Mouillierat and Eric O'Dell.

Drew MacIntyre stopped 23 shots for the Marlies, and Dekanich made 40 saves for the IceCaps.

St. John's head coach Keith McCambridge was happy with his goaltender's performance, despite the loss.

"He looks like a really confident, controlled goaltender on the back-end right now," said McCambridge. "He kept us in that game when Toronto put a whole plethora of shots to the net with traffic."

The IceCaps got on the board first when O'Dell skated down the left boards, then circled the net and found Mouillierat in front for the easy tap-in at 3:34 of the opening period.

The Marlies replied shortly afterwards with a power play goal from Lasch at 9:33.

There was a scramble in front of Dekanich, and he made the initial stop before Lasch buried the rebound from a difficult angle.

Dekanich made a crucial series of saves to keep the Marlies off the board on a power play near the beginning of the second period.

Toronto solved Dekanich with a fluttering puck shot by Blacker through a screen at 5:24.

Blacker shot the puck from the point, which made its way through some traffic before finding its way into the net.

St. John's clawed their way back into the game with another goal from the O'Dell-Mouillierat pairing at 12:50.

O'Dell continued his torrid scoring pace with his 26th goal of the season on a give and go play with Mouillierat.

Mouillierat took a pass from O'Dell and gained the zone and then put a shot on net that O'Dell tipped past MacIntyre, to make it 2-2.

Scott scored the winner when shook his defender with a stutter-step deke before roofing the puck over Dekanich for his tenth goal of the season.

St. John's was 0 for 3 on the power play and Toronto was 1 for 5.

IceCaps rookie defenceman Ben Chiarot said it is difficult to battle all game just to lose in overtime.

"It's obviously frustrating. You battle all game, you fight to get to overtime and then getting scored on in overtime is tough. Anytime you work that hard and don't get the two points, that's tough."
