Defenceman Jake Gardiner's stay with the Toronto Maple Leafs has come to an end for the time being.

On Friday, the club sent Gardiner to the Toronto Marlies of the AHL.

The 22-year-old made his season debut on Wednesday after being out of action since December 8 with a concussion that he suffered during the lockout while playing with the Marlies.

According to TSN Hockey Insider Darren Dreger, the move was made so Gardiner could get time to adjust to the speed of the game again.

Gardiner had 17 points win 22 games for the Marlies before the injury.  He failed to record a point in the two games he played with the Leafs this season.

In No Hurry

The Maple Leafs' 7-4 home loss to the New York Islanders on Thursday, in which goaltender Ben Scrivens was pulled from the Toronto net, has apparently not set off any alarm bells with general manager Dave Nonis.

Though Toronto is believed to have recently shown interest in Vancouver's Roberto Luongo and the Kings' Jonathan Bernier, the barrage of goals on Thursday isn't rushing the club's plans.

"No, nothing has changed; if there's a deal out there that makes us better that doesn't severely affect us going forward, then we would look to do it," Nonis told TSN Hockey Insider Pierre LeBrun on ESPN.com.

"And if there's not, then it's important the players we have in our room compete like they have prior to (Thursday) night. There is no change in the direction we're going."

LeBrun believes that the Leafs have continued interest in Luongo, but the Canucks have interest in Nazem Kadri and the Leafs will not give him up as part of any deal.

The team has not announced who will start on Saturday night when they travel to Madison Square Garden to face the New York Rangers.
