Rebecca Marino will share her story in a one-on-one interview with Michael Landsberg on Off The Record today on TSN (5pm et/2pm pt).
The Canadian tennis player from Vancouver announced on Wednesday that she is stepping away from the court in part due to her ongoing battle with depression.
Landsberg himself has become a spokesperson in the fight against depression and speaks frequently about his own battle with the disease. He is a key figure in Bell Let's Talk Day, an annual event that raises awareness about mental health issues.
Marino, 22, peaked at No. 38 in the WTA world rankings in 2011. She said on Wednesday that she has battled issues with depression that were undiagnosed and untreated for years. The stress and isolation of travelling for tennis for nearly a decade had worsened her illness and she eventually began to seek treatment.
"I'd like to get rid of the stigma attached to depression and mental illnesses in the public and in professional sports," she explained in a conference call on Wednesday.
"Depression is nothing to be ashamed of. If I can open up about my struggle to the public, I hope I can give someone the courage to seek the help they deserve."
