The St. Louis Blues released defenceman Ryan Whitney from his professional tryout on Friday.
The 30-year-old had been in the Blues' training camp since Sep. 12.
A veteran of eight NHL seasons, Whitney appeared in 34 games for the Edmonton Oilers last season and had four goals and nine assists. In 474 career NHL contests for Edmonton, Pittsburgh, and Anaheim, Whitney has 50 goals and 209 assists.
Whitney was the Penguins' first pick (fifth overall) in the 2002 NHL Draft.
The 6'4", 209 lb blueliner once again becomes an unrestricted free agent. He just completed a six-year, $24 million contract that he signed with Pittsburgh prior to the 2007-08 season.
