MANCHESTER, England -- Liverpool was the early mover in what is expected to be a frantic transfer deadline day in the Premier League on Monday, signing young defenders Mamadou Sakho and Tiago Ilori to take their list of summer recruits to seven.

Sakho, who can play at centre back or left back and has 14 caps for France, joined from Paris Saint-Germain on a long-term contract and the 20-year-old Ilori, who has represented Portugal at youth level, moved from Sporting Lisbon. Financial details weren't disclosed.

Chelsea forward Victor Moses is also expected to make a switch to Anfield on Monday, reportedly on a season-long loan, after attending the team's 1-0 victory over Manchester United on Sunday that put Liverpool top of the league.

Arsenal and Manchester United are expected to be busy in the transfer market on Monday as clubs look to finalize their squads for the first half of the season. English teams have already splashed out in the region of 500 million pounds ($775 million) in the summer window and have plenty of money to spend after agreeing bumper new domestic and international television contracts starting this season.

Stoke signed Austria forward Marko Arnautovic from Werder Bremen on a four-year deal for an undisclosed fee and French club Marseille announced it had loaned out France international Morgan Amalfitano to West Bromwich Albion.

Liverpool's double signing, for a reported 25 million pounds ($39 million), gives the squad strength in depth in defence, with Sakho likely to challenge for a first-team place immediately and the London-born Ilora set to be one for the future.

It should also increase the optimism around Anfield after the team started the season with three straight league wins, something the Reds haven't done since the 1993-94 season.

"I came here because the project that is in place at Liverpool interests me," Sakho said. "I'm really looking forward to cracking on with work and I can't wait to get on (the) pitch."
