LEVERKUSEN, Germany -- Bayer Leverkusen has signed Italian defender Giulio Donati from Inter Milan to replace departing right back Daniel Carvajal.

The Bundesliga club says in a statement that the 23-year-old Donati, who spent last season on loan at Italian second-division side Grosseto, has signed a deal through June 2017.

Both sides agreed not to disclose the transfer fee.

Donati says Leverkusen is highly regarded in Italy and he will give his all to help the club achieve its aims.

Leverkusen general manager Wolfgang Holzhaeuser says, "we are convinced that Donati will fill the position of right back very well."

Leverkusen had been looking for a replacement for Spanish defender Carvajal, who returned to Real Madrid after the Spanish runner-up exercised its buy-back option.
