FRANKFURT, Germany -- Stuttgart beat Freiburg for the second time this week, winning 2-1 in the Bundesliga on Sunday, while last-place Greuther Fuerth earned some prestige points by winning 1-0 in neighbouring Nuremberg.
Stuttgart also won at home by the same score in the semifinal of the German Cup on Wednesday.
The loss prevented Freiburg from moving past Schalke into fourth place and Champions League qualifying. Freiburg remained fifth, one point behind Schalke and ahead of Eintracht Frankfurt on goal difference.
Christian Gentner and Vedad Ibisevic used mistakes by Freiburg's defence to score in the first half. Ivan Santini scored in the 88th to create some late suspense but Stuttgart held on. Stuttgart moved up to 10th.
Greuther Fuerth is unlikely to escape relegation despite winning the neighbourhood derby. The club is six points behind Hoffenheim and nine points behind Augsburg, with four matches remaining.
But the victory sent the visiting fans into frenzy. Johannes Geis secured the win with a superb left-foot shot from 25 metres (yards) in the 27th minute.
