PALMA DE MALLORCA, Spain -- Mallorca was held to a 1-1 draw at home by Rayo Vallecano on Friday, leaving the Balearic Island side in the Spanish league's relegation zone.

Forward Francisco "Piti" Medina put Rayo ahead at Iberostar Stadium with his 14th goal of the season when he used his left foot to acrobatically volley Jose Casado's cross just inside the upright seven minutes in.

Alejandro Alfaro equalized for the hosts five minutes later by scrambling in his own rebound from a corner kick.

Rayo went close several times to restoring its lead. Andrija Delibasic forced goalkeeper Juan Calatayud to deflect his shot onto the post before Alhassane Bangoura hit the woodwork twice.

Rayo striker Leo Baptistao was substituted in the 65th after he hurt his right shoulder in a fall.

Mallorca is level on points with Granada, which is clinging to safety. Rayo moved into eighth place.
