WASHINGTON -- The Vancouver Whitecaps have traded Canadian midfielder Kyle Porter to D.C. United for a second-round pick in the 2014 MLS Supplemental Draft.
United announced the deal for Porter in a release Thursday.
The Toronto native joined D.C. in Bradenton, Fla., for its pre-season game against Sweden's Malmo FF on Feb. 1, where he had the game-tying assist.
Porter continued to impress through the pre-season, scoring goals against the Montreal Impact and the Philadelphia Union.
The 23-year-old played last season for FC Edmonton of the NASL and recently made his first appearances with the Canadian men's national team in friendlies on Jan. 26 and Jan. 29.
"Kyle is an excellent prospect for our club," United general manager Dave Kasper said in a release. "He is an athletic midfielder with great range and the ability to manufacture goals. We look forward to Kyle's future with United."
Porter joins Dwayne De Rosario and Dejan Jakovic as one of three Canadian internationals on United's roster.
