KANSAS CITY, Kan. -- Jacob Peterson scored in the 78th minute to earn Sporting Kansas City a 1-1 draw with Nicaragua's Real Esteli in the group stage of the CONCACAF Champions League on Tuesday.

Real Esteli, which remains winless in 35 CONCACAF matches across all tournament formats, opened the scoring in the 54th minute with Rudel Calero's header off a Samuel Wilson.

Peterson's equalizer came after a low corner to the near post from Graham Zusi. The substitute collected the ball near the goalmouth and put it between goalkeeper Justo Lorente's legs.

Sporting leads Group 2 with seven points through three matches and closes out the group stage against Honduras' CD Olimpia on Oct. 23.
