SAN JOSE, Calif. -- Canadian defender Nana Attakora is back in Major League Soccer.

The San Jose Earthquakes have re-signed the 23-year-old from Toronto, who last played for Finnish club FC Haka.

The six-foot-one, 185-pound Attakora joined Toronto FC in 2007 and appeared in 56 career games before coming to the Earthquakes for whom he played just six games.

His contract expired at the end of the 2011 season but the Quakes still controlled his MLS rights. Unable to come to terms with San Jose, he looked elsewhere to play and landed in Finland.

"We're happy to have Nana back to add some depth to our centre backs," San Jose coach Frank Yallop, a former Canadian national team coach, said in a statement. "We never wanted to see him go, but he looked sharp during his stint in Europe and we look forward to having him in an Earthquakes jersey once again."

Attakora has won five caps for Canada, his last coming in a 0-0 tie against the U.S., on Jan. 29 in Houston. He has been chosen Canadian under-20 player of the year twice.
