Ducks sign veteran Koivu to one-year extension

The Anaheim Ducks signed center Saku Koivu to a one-year contract extension through the 2013-14 NHL season on Friday.

Koivu recently completed in his fourth season with Anaheim in 2012-13, compiling 27 points with a +4 plus/minus rating and 18 penalty minutes in 47 contests.

The 38-year-old center ranked fourth on the club in points and tied for third in assists.

"We are happy to bring back a character player like Saku," said Ducks general manager Bob Murray. "At this stage in his career, his first priority is to win, and we are happy he's decided this is the place for him."

A native of Turku, Finland, Koivu is a veteran of 17 NHL seasons, 13 of which were played with the Montreal Canadiens. In 1,058 career NHL games with Anaheim and Montreal, he has scored 803 points with a +7 rating and 763 PIM.

Koivu originally signed with Anaheim on July 8, 2009.
