The Montreal Canadiens are awaiting results on injured defenceman Alexei Emelin, who left Saturday's game against the Boston Bruins with an apparent left knee injury.

Midway through the first period, Emelin put a check on Bruins winger Milan Lucic and bounced back hard onto the ice. He was helped off by teammates and didn't return to the game.

Head coach Michel Therrien later called it a lower-body injury and said he would know more about the injury once it was examined Sunday.

The Canadiens held on to beat the Bruins 2-1 at the Bell Centre. The win gave them a three-point lead over the Bruins for first place in the NHL's Northeast Division, although Boston has a game in hand.
