Joffrey Lupul left the Toronto Maple Leafs' Thursday night game against the Philadelphia Flyers midway through the first period.

The 29-year-old forward left the ice just over seven minutes into the first period after taking a hit from Flyers forward Adam Hall.

He was helped to the dressing room by members of the Maple Leafs' training staff.

The Leafs are calling the injury an upper-body injury. Lupul will not return to the game.

Lupul has missed significant periods of time over the course of his career with injuries, most recently being forced tao miss 25 games from January to early March with a broken arm. That injury was sustained in just the Leafs' third game of the season when he took a Dion Phaneuf slapshot to the arm.

When healthy, Lupul has been one of the Leafs' most productive forwards. In nine games this season, he has scored eight goals and 15 assists. He was named the NHL's first star of the week on Monday for the period spanning Mar. 25-31.

He was suspended two games for a hit to the head of Tampa Bay Lightning defenceman Victor Hedman on March 21.

In 524 career games with the Ducks, Maple Leafs, Flyers and Edmonton Oilers, Lupul has scored 159 goals and 177 assists. He was originally selected seventh overall by the Ducks at the 2002 NHL Entry Draft.

The Leafs acquired Lupul as part of the package that sent Francois Beauchemin back to the Anaheim Ducks in February of 2011. Since arriving in Toronto he has scored 42 goals and 56 assists for 98 points in 103 games played.

Prior to arriving in Toronto, Lupul's history of injuries was significant. He has not played more than 70 games in an NHL season since 2008-09 due to a variety of ailments including a severe back injury, a separated shoulder and this season's broken arm.

Lupul missed time due to concussions on three occasions between 2005 and 2008.
