The Montreal Canadiens placed defenceman Tomas Kaberle on waivers on Saturday.

In 10 games with the Canadiens this season, the 35-year-old has registered three assists and a plus-four rating.

According to TSN Hockey Insider Bob McKenzie, the move does not necessarily mean that Kaberle will be assigned to the American Hockey League if he clears, but rather the move opens up the possibility for the team to do so, should it require salary cap flexibility prior to Wednesday's trade deadline.

Kaberle is currently in the second year of a three-year deal worth an average annual value of $4.25 million.

A veteran of 984 NHL games, Kaberle has suited up with the Canadiens, Toronto Maple Leafs, Boston Bruins and Carolina Hurricanes. In his 14 NHL seasons, Kaberle has scored 87 goals and added 476 assists.

He was originally drafted in the eighth round (204th overall) of the 1996 NHL Entry Draft by the Maple Leafs. He was acquired by the Canadiens from the Carolina Hurricanes via trade in 2011 in exchange for defenceman Jaroslav Spacek.

A trade deadline acquisition in 2011, Kaberle won the Stanley Cup with the Boston Bruins. He has also been selected to play in four NHL All-Star games.

Kaberle has represented the Czech Republic on several occasions, appearing in three Olympics and winning a bronze medal in 2006. He has also won gold and silver at the IIHF World Championships.
