Los Angeles Kings defenceman Matt Greene is out at least six weeks after suffering a back injury on Saturday.

Greene suffered a herniated disc in a game against the Chicago Blackhawks and is expected to undergo surgery this week.

Initially, the Kings thought Greene was out for the season.

Defenceman Andrew Bodnarchuk was recalled from the Manchester Monarchs of the American Hockey League.

Last season, Greene scored four goals and added 11 assists for 15 points, playing in all 82 games.

Greene was originally drafted by the Edmonton Oilers in the 2nd round (44th overall) in 2002.

After three seasons with the Oilers, the Michigan native was traded to the Kings along with forward Jarret Stoll in exchange for defenceman Lubomir Visnovsky.
