The Toronto Maple Leafs defenceman Mike Komisarek has cleared waivers.

After agreeing to waive his no-movement clause prior to being placed on waivers Wednesday, Komisarek has been assigned to the Toronto Marlies of the American Hockey League.

"Mike is excited and looking for the opportunity to play games and compete. The Leafs handled the situation very well and we'll see where things go," Komisarek's agent Matt Keator said.

The 31-year old New York native has seen limited time on the team's blue line this season, appearing in just four games registering no points a plus-two rating and two penalty minutes.

A big-name free agent signing in 2009, Komisarek still has one more year remaining on his deal beyond this season at an average annual value of $4.5 million.

Originally selected by the Montreal Canadiens in the first round (seventh overall) at the 2001 NHL Entry Draft, Komisarek was allowed to leave town as an unrestricted free agent and opted to sign with the arch-rival Leafs.

Komisarek's $4.5 million salary will remain on the Leafs salary cap for the remainder of the season. He is still owed an additional $4.5 million for the 2013-14 season, unless Toronto decides to use one of its compliance buyouts on him this off-season to remove the defenceman from its salary cap obligations.

Forward Ryan Hamilton has been recalled from the Marlies to fill Komisarek's roster spot.
