Lake Forest, IL (Sports Network) - Seeking some experienced depth at the quarterback position, the Chicago Bears signed onetime Buffalo starter Trent Edwards to a one-year contract on Sunday.

Edwards opened 32 games for the Bills over his first four NFL seasons from 2007-10, but was waived early in the 2010 campaign following the emergence of Ryan Fitzpatrick to the No. 1 role. He was subsequently claimed by Jacksonville and appeared in three games with one start for the Jaguars that year, then was out of football in 2011 before serving as the third quarterback for Philadelphia last season.

The 29-year-old has thrown for 6,033 yards with 26 touchdowns and 30 interceptions over 38 overall NFL games, while completing 60.6 percent of his pass attempts.

Edwards gives Chicago five quarterbacks currently on the roster, with the team signing fellow veteran Jordan Palmer on Saturday. However, Matt Blanchard, who opened camp as the No. 3 signal-caller behind Jay Cutler and Josh McCown, is currently sidelined with a fractured knuckle on his non-throwing hand.

To make room for Edwards, the Bears waived wide receiver Jerrell Jackson.
