2013 NBA Draft Lottery

draftThe Cleveland Cavaliers have won the 2013 NBA Draft Lottery.

The Cavs had a 13.8 percent chance of winning the lottery and came up with the winning combination to earn the right to the top choice.

The Orlando Magic, which had the highest odds of winning the lottery at 25 percent, will select second overall. The Washington Wizards also moved up five spots to secure the third overall selection.

It is Cleveland's fourth-ever first-overall choice in the NBA draft. They famously won the lottery in 2003 to win the right to pick LeBron James first overall. They would win the lottery again one year after he left to play in Miami, selecting Kyrie Irving.

Like 2011, the Cavaliers were represented at the Lottery by Nick Gilbert, son of owner Dan Gilbert.

They also selected Austin Carr first overall in 1971. The Cavs held the fourth selection in 2012, picking Dion Waiters.

The Toronto Raptors, having finished with the 12th-worst record in the league did not move thanks to the draft lottery but will not be holding onto the pick. The Raptors traded their 2013 first-rounder - which was top-three protected - to the Houston Rockets in exchange for guard Kyle Lowry.

The Rockets subsequently dealt the Raptors pick to the Oklahoma City Thunder as part of the trade that sent guard James Harden to the Rockets.

Fourteen balls numbered 1 through 14 were be placed in a drum to determine the lottery results. There were 1,001 possible combinations when four balls were drawn out of 14. Prior to the lottery, 1,000 combinations were assigned to the 14 lottery teams by a computer.

Four balls were drawn to determine a four-digit combination. The Cavaliers, which had been assigned that particular combination, received the first overall pick. The four balls were then put back in the drum and the process was repeated to determine the second and third selections. The order of selection for teams that do not land one of the top three picks was be determined by the inverse order of their regular season record. (Source: NBA.com)

The 2013 NBA Draft will be held in Brooklyn, NY on Thursday, June 27 at 7pm et.
