The club announced that goaltender Carey Price, who suffered a lower body injury at the end of regulation in Game 4, will be out for the remainder of the series.
Budaj was 8-1-1 in the regular season with a 2.29 goals-against average and .908 save percentage. He replaced Price for the overtime period in their 3-2 loss Tuesday night in Ottawa - facing shots and allowing the game-winning goal by Kyle Turris.
"I am confident in Peter Budaj," head coach Michel Therrien told reporters after the morning skate. "Every time we needed him, he performed well."
Robert Mayer, who was called up by the Canadiens from the AHL's Hamilton Bulldogs at the start of the playoffs, will serve as the backup.
The Canadiens announced Wednesday that captain Brian Gionta - who missed Game 2 and Game 4 - would miss the rest of the playoffs with a torn biceps tendon. He is to undergo surgery on Friday.
Forwards Ryan White, Brandon Prust and Lars Eller are also out with injuries. Forward Max Pacioretty will return to the lineup, while forward Michael Blunden is expected to draw in for his first career playoff game.
The seventh-seeded Senators enter Game 5 with a 3-1 edge in the series. Ottawa earned a split at Montreal's Bell Centre to begin the best-of-seven set before taking the last two meetings on home ice.
The Canadiens will try to stave off elimination tonight on home ice, where they were 14-7-3 as the host during the regular season. Ottawa, which has never squandered a 3-1 series edge in its modern history, was 10-11-3 on the road this season.
If necessary, Game 6 of this series is scheduled for Saturday in Ottawa.
