OTTAWA, Ont. -- Catcher John Suomi has been added to Canada's roster for the upcoming World Baseball Classic, Baseball Canada announced Monday.

Suomi, a Toronto native, replaces Russell Martin, of Chelsea, Que., who has withdrawn from taking part in the tournament.

Suomi spent last season at Lehigh, the Philadelphia Phillies' triple-A farm club. Suomi hit .265 with four home runs and drove in 18 runs over 64 games.

Suomi was originally selected in the 22nd round of the 2000 major league draft by the Oakland Athletics.
