Giants win series 4-0

History

Despite having participated in a combined 29 World Series prior to this season, the Tigers and Giants have never once squared off in the Fall Classic.

For these San Francisco Giants, the 2012 World Series marks an opportunity to build a winning tradition after subjecting its fan-base to 50-plus years of misery.

The 2012 Giants are built on largely the same frame as the 2010 Giants that last won baseball's top prize, San Francisco's first since baseball arrived in 1958.

Matt Cain, Madison Bumgarner and Tim Lincecum are all holdovers from the 2010 World Series starting rotation and while closer Brian Wilson will not be a factor this time around, current closer Sergio Romo was a big part of that team's bullpen.

The batting order has seen significant turnover, but Buster Posey and Pablo Sandoval – who both earned rings in 2010 – have been catalysts for the Giants for the entire post-season.

The Giants have appeared in 18 World Series prior to this season between New York and San Francisco, winning six.

The Tigers, meanwhile, are staring at one of baseball's longest waits for another title.

Last having captured the Commissioner's Trophy in 1984 with the likes of Kirk Gibson, Jack Morris and Alan Trammell leading the charge, only four teams have waited longer for another title than the Tigers.

Detroit last reached the Series in 2006 where they would fall to the St. Louis Cardinals.

Two major pieces of that team remains in the forms of manager Jim Leyland and ace Justin Verlander. However, the 2012 batting order is far more dangerous than its predecessor from half a dozen years ago.

Triple-Crown-winner Miguel Cabrera, perennial 30-home run hitter Prince Fielder and ALCS MVP Delmon Young have formed a fearsome power core that has backed up the team's talented starting rotation throughout the 2012 season.

The Tigers have appeared in 11 World Series prior to this season, winning in 1935, 1945, 1968 and 1984.
