Toronto, ON – In just over 24 hours, Winnipeg, MB's Richard Pope could change his life forever, as the 35-year-old multimedia editor has advanced to the Wendy's Kick for a Million final and will have the chance to kick a 50-yard field goal worth $1 million.
The big event airs live nationally tonight during halftime of the CFL ON TSN: WENDY'S FRIDAY NIGHT FOOTBALL broadcast featuring Winnipeg at Toronto (game starts at 7 p.m. ET).
Earlier this afternoon, Pope defeated Burlington, ON's Dave Swanston in the Wendy's Kick for a Million semifinal that took place at Rogers Centre and was seen live on TSN.ca. The entire semifinal event is available on-demand on the website.
In today's semifinal, Swanston and Pope were each given six kicks from distances of their choice ranging from 15 to 50 yards. They were awarded points equal to the distance (i.e.: 15 yards = 15 points) for each successful field goal.
Swanston started the semifinal off by making his first field goal attempt from 35 yards. He missed on his second try from the same distance, but split the uprights from 30 yards on his third attempt. Pope missed on his first three kicks from 35 yards, but then made consecutive field goals from 35 yards on his fourth and fifth attempts. With the score 70-65 in favour of Pope, Swanston went back to the 35 yard line for his final kick after missing from 30 yards out on his fourth and fifth attempts. Swanston's kick was wide left, allowing Pope to advance to the Wendy's Kick for a Million final tomorrow night.
Tomorrow, Pope will attempt to win outstanding prizes by kicking field goals from 20-, 30-, 40- and 50-yards, live on TSN, during halftime of the Winnipeg-Toronto game at Rogers Centre. The prizes for this year's Wendy's Kick for a Million final are as follows:
- 20 Yards – $25,000 Gift Card from The Source
- 30 Yards – Nissan Titan PRO-4X
- 40 Yards – $100,000 cash
- 50 Yards – $1 million in a one-time payout – or, if the 50-yard attempt falls short, $1,000 for every yard the ball is kicked in the air
Pope's name was randomly selected from more than 14 million total entries submitted for this year's edition of Wendy's Kick for a Million.
