When Manchester United acquired Robin van Persie from Arsenal, fans across the league feared the worst: the possibility of having to watch their team defend both last year's league top scorer and Wayne Rooney, a man that fired home 27 goals last season.

Though an injury to Rooney has limited their time together so far, the question is: are they currently the best offensive combination in the English Premier League?

In his first four games for the Red Devils, van Persie has picked up where he left off last season, already scoring four goals, which ties him with Swansea City's Michu for the league lead.

Still working his way back from the leg laceration he suffered against Fulham, Rooney was not able to find the back of the net in either of the games he played so far this season.

His goal scoring track record, however, is impressive, as he has accounted for 64 goals in League competition in the three campaigns prior to this season.

Two players that also had a working knowledge of each other's games prior to teaming up in the Premier League are Manchester City's Argentinian strikers Carlos Tevez and Sergio Aguero.

Injuries have also limited their time together this season as Aguero hurt his knee in the team's opening victory over Southampton.  Last season, the Quilmes- native led City with 23 Premier League goals including the injury-time winner that clinched the title.

Tevez has done his part with three goals so far this season and he's also added two assists to the Man City attack as they attempt to defend their first English crown since 1968.

After a tough offensive start to the season - being held scoreless in their first two games - Arsenal has broken out thanks to two players that have powered their attack.

German international forward Lukas Podolski was brought in to help replace the scoring hole that was created by the departure of van Persie to United.  Last season the 27-year-old striker scored 18 goals for FC Cologne of the Bundesliga and he has found the back of the net in each of Arsenal's last two games, including their emphatic 6-1 victory over Southampton Saturday.

Gervinho also got on track against Southampton scoring twice to lead the Gunners to victory.

Newcastle has teamed up Senegalese strikers Demba Ba and Papiss Cisse to drive their offence. The club rode the duo great success at the end of last season as well.

In just 13 games after completing a transfer from SC Freiburg, Cisse scored 13 goals leading Newcastle to an impressive fifth-place finish in the table last year.  He's had trouble getting off the mark this season but has fired eight shots on goal and has been active in the offence.

Ba meanwhile has three goals already this season and finished last year with 16 markers to lead the Magpies attack.

Though they don't line up as traditional strikers, Chelsea added a strong offensive boost to Fernando Torres' goal-scoring prowess from the newly acquired Eden Hazard.

Meanwhile for Liverpool, Steven Gerrard complements one of the most prolific strikers in the league in Luis Suarez.

With many great partnerships to choose from the question is, what is the greatest offensive combination in the English Premier League?
