OTTAWA (CIS) - Basketball players Diane Schuetze from Thompson Rivers University and Matt Forbes from the University of Saskatchewan were named the CIS female and male athletes of the week on Wednesday.
Schuetze, a fourth-year tourism student from Vernon, B.C., averaged 25.5 points and 15 rebounds per game as the WolfPack (14-5) moved closer to a home playoff berth thanks to a two-game sweep against Trinity Western, 81-72 and 72-60. The 6-foot-3 post recorded 28 points, 17 rebounds and five assists in last Thursday's series opener and followed up with another double-double on Friday, this time finishing the contest with 23 points and 13 boards. A second-team all-Canadian last season, Schuetze currently leads the country in rebounding (12.3 rpg) and sits second in Canada West scoring (18.8 ppg).
Memorial basketball player Ally Forsey, Sherbrooke volleyball player Catherine Martin and York basketball player Kayla Pangos were also nominated for the women's award.
Forbes, a second-year arts and science student from Regina Beach, Sask., was simply too much for Winnipeg last weekend as he averaged a remarkable 35 points per game to lead the ninth-ranked Huskies (13-5) to 95-74 and 89-65 victories over the Wesmen. The 6-foot-6 forward toyed with perfection on Friday when he shot 13-of-14 from the floor and posted the exact same numbers from the free-throw line en route to a career-high 40 points. The talented sophomore was also dominant the following night with a 30-point, 10-rebound double-double.
Moncton hockey player André-Michel Guay, Laval volleyball player Tommy Bélisle and Lakehead hockey player Adam Sergerie were the other male nominees.
