OHL: Frontenacs stomp Petes in season opener

PETERBOROUGH, Ont. - The Kingston Frontenacs' Ontario Hockey League season got off to a flying start on Thursday.

Samuel Schutt and Darcy Greenaway both had hat tricks as Kingston drubbed the Peterborough Petes 11-4 in the season opener for both teams.

Schutt had a power-play goal for the Frontenacs (1-0-0), as did Lawson Crouse, Warren Steele and Sam Bennett. Conor McGlynn and Spencer Watson chipped in as well, while Matt Mahalak made 31 saves for the win.

Eric Cornel had a short-handed goal for Peterborough (0-1-0), while Nick Ritchie, Jonatan Tanus and Stephen Pierog scored as well.

Goaltender Andrew D'Agostini got the start for the Petes, stopping 21-of-27 shots in 33:52 of work. He was replaced in net by Michael Giugovaz, who turned aside 14-of-19 shots.

Kingston was 4 for 7 on the power play, while Peterborough couldn't score on its three man advantages.

Steelheads 6 IceDogs 5 (OT)

ST. CATHARINES, Ont. -- Defenceman Jacob Graves scored 3:04 into overtime as Mississauga slipped past Niagara.

Bryson Cianfrone had a pair of goals for the Steelheads (1-0-0), while Dylan Smoskowitz, Trevor Carrick, Eric Diodati also scored. Dawson Carty was pulled from the Mississauga goal after giving up two goals on four shots in the first 1:34 of play. Spencer Martin earned the win, stopping 29 of 32 shots in 62:28.

Jesse Graham and Carter Verhaeghe gave the IceDogs (0-0-1) the early 2-0 lead. Ben Hughes, Brendan Perlini and Graham Knott rounded out the Niagara offence, while Brent Moran stopped 38 shots.

Generals 4 Spitfires 3

WINDSOR, Ont. -- Michael Dal Colle had two goals and two assists as Oshawa edged the Spitfires.

Josh Sterk scored and added two assists for the Generals (1-0-0), while Hunter Smith scored the winner on the power play with 3:14 left in the third period. Daniel Altshuller made 30 saves for the win.

Captain Kerby Rychel had a pair of goals for Windsor (0-1-0) and Steven Janes found the back of the net as well. Goalie Jordan DeKort stopped 29 shots.

Colts 7 Spirit 4

BARRIE, Ont. -- Andreas Athanasiou and Josh MacDonald had two goals each as the Colts skated past Saginaw.

Matthew Kreis and Mitchell Theoret also scored for Barrie (1-0-0), while Erik Bradford added an empty-net goal. Alex Fotinos made 34 saves.

Cody Payne struck twice for the Spirit (0-1-0), as Jacob Ringuette and Justin Sefton added singles. Jake Paterson turned aside 35 shots.
