The Portland Winterhawks qualified for the Western Hockey League playoffs in style.

The Winterhawks got a gift goal early and never looked back in a 6-0 demolition of the Everett Silvertips on Tuesday to become the first WHL team to clinch a post-season berth.

Portland was in control from the moment Everett defenceman Connor Cox inadvertently put a rebound into his own net on the power play 4:28 into the game. That began a four-goal burst that spanned just 3:38, effectively putting things out of reach.

Elsewhere in the WHL it was: Calgary 3, Medicine Hat 2; Seattle 6, Prince George 1; and Prince Albert 6, Victoria 5 (SO).

At Everett, Wash., Ty Rattie scored two goals and Nicolas Petan added a goal and two assists for Portland (40-7-3), which is a perfect 8-0-0 against Everett this season.

Taylor Leier, Presten Kopeck and Troy Rutkowski also scored for the Winterhawks, while Brendan Burke needed just 17 saves to post the shutout.

Daniel Cotton finished with 35 saves in taking the loss for Everett (21-28-3).

Hitmen 3, Tigers 2

At Medicine Hat, Alta., Pavlo Padakin scored a tiebreaking goal in the third period as Calgary (33-13-4) topped the Tigers (25-24-3).

---

Thunderbirds 6, Cougars 1

At Kent, Wash., Shea Theodore had two goals and Brandon Glover made 29 saves as the Seattle Thunderbirds (19-28-4) ended a three-game losing streak by dropping Prince George (15-29-4).

---

Raider 6, Royals 5 (SO)

At Victoria, Mark McNeill scored with one tenth of a second left in regulation and Leon Draisaitl had the only goal of the shootout as Prince Albert (29-17-4) got past the Royals (27-17-1-3).
