WINNIPEG -- The Winnipeg Blue Bombers are hoping like father, like son.

The CFL club signed rookie punter Brett Cameron on Wednesday. The 22-year-old Cameron is the son of Bob Cameron, who spent 23 seasons as Winnipeg's punter before being inducted into the Canadian Football Hall of Fame in 2010.

The six-foot-one, 194-pound Brett Cameron played his high school football in Winnipeg before spending four seasons at the University of North Dakota.

Brett Cameron played three seasons at North Dakota and his 40.6-yard average leaves him tied for the second-best mark in school history. He posted a career-best 42.1-yard average as a senior.

"Brett is a prospect with great potential at the professional level," Bombers GM Joe Mack said in a statement. "When it is the right fit, it is always appealing to have local talent within your organization and we look forward to Brett coming in and competing in our training camp."

The Bombers looked at revamping their special teams last season but ended up sticking with kicker Justin Palardy and punter Mike Renaud.
