Switzerland upsets Sweden at hockey worlds

STOCKHOLM, Sweden -- Martin Gerber made 29 saves, and Matthias Bieber and Nino Niederreiter scored second-period goals to help Switzerland beat Sweden 3-2 on Friday night in the world hockey championships.

Ryan Gardner added an empty-net goal in the third period for Switzerland.

Simon Hjalmarsson and Johan Fransson scored for Sweden.

In the other opening game in Stockholm, Radim Vrbata and Jakub Voracek scored and Alexander Salak stopped 21 shots in the Czech Republic's 2-0 victory over Belarus.

In Helsinki, Finland beat Germany 4-3 on Veli-Matti Savinainen's overtime goal. Finland's Janne Pesonen scored with 1:29 left in regulation after assisting on Petri Kontiola's two goals.

In the other opener in Helsinki, Slovakia beat France 6-2. Michel Miklik, Tomas Zaborsky, Branko Radivojevic, Miroslav Satan, Peter Olvecky and Libor Hudacek scored for Slovakia.

The United States and Canada will open play Saturday. The Americans will face Austria in Helsinki, and Canada will meet Denmark in Stockholm.
