SAULT STE. MARIE, Ont. -- Jesse Shynkaruk scored twice in the first five minutes as the Saskatoon Contacts beat the Ottawa Jr. 67's 4-2 on Monday in the first game of the Telus Cup national midget hockey championship.
Kolten Olynek and Cameron Hebig also scored for the Contacts, who are representing the West region at the tournament. Rylan Parenteau made 31 saves.
Joey Sollazzo and Ryan Kuffner scored for the Central region's 67's. Simon Hofley stopped 29 shots.
In the afternoon tilt, Jacob Schofield had a goal and two assists as the Pacific region's Red Deer Chiefs defeated Quebec's Rousseau Royal de Laval-Montreal 5-1.
Jody Sick, with a goal and an assist, Ryker Leer, Chase Thudium and Jack Goranson also scored for Red Deer, which got 21 saves from Matt Zentner.
Marc-Antoine Germain had the only goal for Laval-Montreal, which got a combined 27 stops from Alexandre Duckett and Stefano Cantali.
Monday's night game saw the host Sault Ste. Marie North Stars defeat the Atlantic region's Valley Wildcats 6-2.
Matt Pinder had a hat trick for Sault Ste. Marie, which also got goals from Jaron Rowe, Ryan Cooke and Anthony Stefano. Jacob Kment made 33 saves for the win
Nic Blanchard and John Deacon scored for Valley. Justin Ritcey and Michael Pettet combined to make 25 saves in taking the loss.
