Sweden stops Russia in semifinal shootout

Sweden defeated Russia 3-2 in a shootout on Thursday in their semifinal game at the World Junior Hockey Championship in Ufa, Russia. Sweden will play the United States for the gold medal on Saturday. Russia will face Canada for bronze.

Sweden had blown a 2-0 lead in the game, but after a scorelss overtime they prevailed when Sebastian Collberg scored a spectacular goal in the shootout, clinching Sweden's spot in the gold medal game for the second straight year.

The game started well for the Swedes, who totally dominated the first period. Elias Lindholm slid home a powerplay goal at 6:34 to put Sweden ahead 1-0. Five minutes later, Filip Forsberg snapped a shot over the shoulder of Russian goaltender Andrei Vasilevski to make it 2-0 for the Swedes before the hosts could even muster a shot.

Russia finished the period with just two shots on goal and only the stellar play of Vasilevski kept the score close.

Russia capitalized on their first good chance, with Andrei Mironov connecting from the point at 12:28 of the second period, cutting the lead in half.

Russia turned up the pressure in a frenzied third period, and Mikhail Gringorenko tied the score at 12:04, cashing in a rebound on a goal-mouth scramble.

Sweden, which won Group A by taking 11 of a possible 12 points, will face a confident American side for the gold medal on TSN on Saturday at 8am et/5am pt.

Russia will face Canada for the bronze on Saturday on TSN at 3:30am et/12:30am pt.

Sweden beat Russia in last year's gold medal game in an overtime thriller. In fact, the last four meetings between Sweden and Russia at this tournament have gone to overtime.
