HALIFAX -- Nova Scotia Premier Darrell Dexter came to the defence of boxing at the Canada Winter Games on Friday, saying it's a shame to see the sport being taken out of the competition.
The Canada Games Council has decided boxing won't be on the schedule when the winter event is held in four years' time in Prince George, B.C.
A number of boxers from Nova Scotia made it to gold medal fights at the Games in Halifax.
"I think it's terrible, particularly for Nova Scotia, we have always had a great boxing heritage," Dexter said.
The premier said he spent some time with Nova Scotia's boxing team this week.
"They're just great individuals, they're working really hard on what I consider to be a great sport and it's a shame to see it taken out of the Games."
