BROOKVALE, P.E.I. -- Raphael Gagne of Lac-Beauport, Que., won the first gold medal of the Canada Games Monday with a first-place finish in men's mountain biking.
Gagne completed the eight-lap Brookvale Provincial Park circuit in one hour 36 minutes 25 seconds, becoming the first cyclist to successfully defend his title at the Canada Games.
An easy win for the 22-year-old athlete who took seventh place in last year's under-23 world championships, Gagne was already in the lead by the third lap.
By the fifth he was a minute ahead of national junior champion Evan William Guthrie of Peachland, B.C., who ended the race 51 seconds behind Gagne.
Quebec City's Leni Trudel finished third in 1:38.4.
