Of the 33 non-imports on the roster, 12 of them (36.4%) were acquired via the draft.

Key Canadian Additions: OG Simeon Rottier, DT Don Oramasionwu, WR Matt Carter, WR Aaron Hargreaves, P Burke Dales, K/LB Grant Shaw

Key Canadian Losses: RB Jerome Messam, OL Aaron Fiacconi, OL Patrick Kabongo, SB Chris Bauman

In The Pipeline: Although RB Jerome Messam left Edmonton to sign with the NFL's Miami Dolphins, the Eskimos will retain his CFL rights this season because he was entering the option year of his CFL contract. They are also waiting for versatile Brigham Young athlete Dalin Tollestrup to complete his NCAA eligibility this fall. Less likely to ever appear in Edmonton are veteran Canadian NFLers DL Israel Idonije, K Shaun Suisham, and LS L.P. Ladouceur. The rights to all three were acquired from Ottawa in the 2006 Dispersal Draft.

Potential Non-Import Starting Positions: 3 OL, 2 WR, RB, DT, FS

Most Pressing Need: In terms of a position, linebacker is where the Esks Canadian talent is thinnest, although Mike Miller and/or Corbin Sharun could theoretically be considered there. Continuing the rebuild of the offensive line is also a consideration, after parting ways with Aaron Fiacconi and Patrick Kabongo, and adding Simeon Rottier. Overall, what the Esks really need is to exchange some of their quantity for quality. Don't be surprised to see them deal non-imports from their O- and D-Lines for an opportunity to get high draft choices.

Implications of Past Drafts: To be blunt, the Eskimos hadn't drafted well for years leading up to Eric Tillman's hiring as general manager. With rebuilding the club's non-import talent base as one of ET's top priorities, he has been forced to rely heavily on free agency to achieve a quick turnaround. Cashing in, with two of the first six picks overall for the second consecutive year, would help reduce the pressure on the club to spend next February.

2012 Selections (4): 2nd, 6th, 20th, 36th
