ST. JOHN'S, N.L. -- Eric O'Dell recorded the third hat trick of his American Hockey League career on Saturday to lift the St. John's IceCaps past the Providence Bruins 5-1.
O'Dell scored his second, third and fourth goals of the season as St. John's dominated from start to finish, racking up 40-plus shots for the second straight game.
Jerome Samson had a goal and two assists for the IceCaps (1-0-1) and Brenden Kichton scored his first pro goal and helped on another. Ben Chiarot, Kael Mouillierat and Will O'Neill each had two assists.
Joe Morrow scored the lone goal for the Bruins (1-1-0).
Eddie Pasquale stopped 36 shots, including 28 in the final two periods. Malcolm Subban, making his professional debut for Providence, allowed four goals on 40 shots in the loss.
St. John's opened the scoring with O'Dell's power-play goal at 12:32 of the first period. Kichton added to the IceCaps lead on another power play to make it 2-0 after 20 minutes of play.
Samson made it 3-0 for the hometown team with his first goal as an IceCap midway through the second period.
O'Dell picked up his second goal of the night early in the third period, and capped off the hat trick with eight seconds left on the clock.
Morrow put the Bruins on the board at 5:48 of the third period, beating Pasquale with a wrist shot from the blueline.
St John's went 2 for 3 on the power play while Providence failed to score on four chances with the man advantage.
