ST. JOHN'S, N.L. -- The St. John's IceCaps blew another two-goal lead Saturday night to extend their home losing streak to eight games.
J.T. Wyman led the way with a goal and an assist as the Syracuse Crunch beat the IceCaps 4-2 in American Hockey League play.
Matt Taormina, Brett Connolly and Tyler Johnson scored for the Crunch (36-17-7). Richard Panik had two assists. Riku Helenius stopped 23 shots for Syracuse.
Aaron Gagnon scored twice for the IceCaps (23-32-5). Ed Pasquale made 31 saves for St. John's.
The eight game losing streak does not sit well with St. John's head coach Keith McCambridge.
"It's disappointment, it's frustration, all of the above," he said. "Two-goal lead again, we let slip away. They picked up the pace of the game and we couldn't match it."
Gagnon said the mood in the dressing room was one of frustration because the team can't manage to turn things around.
"It's the same thing over and over again. Everyone is obviously pretty upset with it. It's tough to find words on what to say, it's not something new, we can't just write the magic story all of a sudden."
Ray Sawada took a crushing hit entering the zone, but found Kael Mouillierat before getting hit. Mouillierat's shot was saved, but Gagnon capitalized on the rebound as the IceCaps took a 1-0 lead.
The second goal was a result of some hard work from Eric O'Dell and Patrice Cormier on the power play. O'Dell took a hit, but got the puck to Cormier, who managed to find Gagnon for his second of the night.
The Crunch roared out of the gate for the second period, outshooting their opposition 12-0 before the IceCaps registered their first shot of the frame.
Syracuse went on to outshoot St. John's 19-2 in the frame and were rewarded for their efforts.
"It's tough when you have such a good period like that, and then the second period, we had two shots there," said Gagnon. "We were in our end the whole time. That's the game right there. Even though we weren't down any after the second, it took all momentum away from us."
Taormina put the game within one with his goal at 2:23 of the second.
There was a scrum that caught the attention of three of the defenders and left Taormina wide open on the right point.
J.T. Brown saw Taormina open and made a slick pass cross-ice for him to one-time into the net.
Wyman tied the game at 11:44. He gained the zone and put a wrist shot from near the end of the circle in the net, which beat Pasquale cleanly.
The Crunch continued the press in the third period, and took their first lead of the game at 9:15.
Radko Gudas hammered a slap shot from the point, and Connolly tipped it in past Pasquale from a few feet in front of him.
Johnson added an insurance goal through traffic at 10:44.
The IceCaps were 1 for 3 on the power play and Syracuse went 1 for 3.
