Week 3 Picks

NY Giants (-1.5)
@
Carolina
Schultz Picks: NY Giants

World Picks: 56.1% - NY Giants
NYG 36 CAR 7 NY Giants Wins
Your Pick:

Carolina regained its confidence with a solid win over a Saints team that going into the game was a bit desperate at 0-1. Ron Rivera took a strategic chance and ran the ball effectively by design, not putting all the pressure on his still-developing QB Cam Newton. The Giants, well, they have been humbled a bit in losing to Dallas in the first game of the year, and nearly again to a surprisingly good Tampa Bay team that needed some fourth quarter heroic play from Eli Manning to win. I don't think Manning will throw an interception on his 10-yard line and have it returned for a touchdown as Drew Brees did last week, so if it comes down to a game-winning field goal, I will take the quarterback that can get it done. Giants cover.

St. Louis
@
Chicago (-7.0)
Schultz Picks: St. Louis

World Picks: 57.5% - Chicago
STL 6 CHI 23 Chicago Wins
Your Pick:

The Rams are an improved team. I realize it is only the third week of the season but with a very competitive game against Detroit that ended up in a 27-23 loss, followed by a 31-28 come from behind win, the Rams are an improved team. The single biggest surprise has been receiver Danny Amendola, who has 20 catches so far this season for 230 yards. He and QB Sam Bradford are working well together. Their opponent, the Chicago Bears, had a more than disappointing loss to Green Bay. It was the seventh win for Green Bay in the last eight games against the Bears. As Brian Urlacher said, "maybe we are not as good as we thought". The Bears will play better this week and St. Louis should continue to improve. Rams keep it close.

Buffalo (-3.0)
@
Cleveland
Schultz Picks: Buffalo

World Picks: 78.9% - Buffalo
BUF 24 CLE 14 Buffalo Wins
Your Pick:

C.J Spiller has run the ball 29 times for 292 yards and has a 10-yard average per carry. That is about as good as it gets over a short time for any running back. Also the Buffalo Bills have not allowed a quarterback sack this year. Maybe the Opening Day loss, 48-28 to the Jets was good for the Bills. We will find out with their second road game of 2012. Bills cover.

1:00 PM Sunday, September 23, 2012

Tampa Bay
@
Dallas (-7.0)
Schultz Picks: Dallas

World Picks: 58.2% - Dallas
TB 10 DAL 16 Tampa Bay Wins
Your Pick:

The Bucs are a tough team with a tough coach in a tough divison. They have competed well in their last two games, but from the Giants on the road to the Cowboys on the road, it may be too much. Dallas looked terrible against the Seahawks in the 27-7 loss. The fumble on the opening kick-off, the blocked punt, it went on and on. This is the Cowboys home opener, and I am anticipating a good game. It's the bounce back game of the week. Dallas covers.

1:00 PM Sunday, September 23, 2012

NY Jets (-3.0)
@
Miami
Schultz Picks: Miami

World Picks: 64.5% - NY Jets
NYJ 23 MIA 20 Tie
Your Pick:

Miami on defence has been a good story. The most important down in football is third down. You either get the ball back or the drive continues. It is often called the "QB down" because there is more pressure on him in that situation than on any other down. Out of 29 attempts on defence, Miami has allowed only eight third down conversions. Considering Mark Sanchez completed only 10 passes in the Steelers game, I anticipate more third down success on defence for the Dolphins. Miami.

San Francisco (-7.0)
@
Minnesota
Schultz Picks: San Francisco

World Picks: 93.6% - San Francisco
SF 13 MIN 24 Minnesota Wins
Your Pick:

After watching how well the 49ers ran the football on a good defensive line of Detroit, well that was impressive. The play-calling was also very balanced with 27 runs and 31 passes called. In Green Bay in Week 1, they called 32 passes and 26 runs. The 49ers have no glaring weaknesses to exploit. I do give the Vikings a punchers chance though. Christian Ponder has played well, completing 75 per cent of his passes. But, the overall competition level goes up dramatically come 1pm et in the Mall of America Field. Early start will have no effect. 49ers roll.

1:00 PM Sunday, September 23, 2012

Kansas City
@
New Orleans (-8.0)
Schultz Picks: New Orleans

World Picks: 84.2% - New Orleans
KC 27 NO 24 Kansas City Wins
Your Pick:

This is it for the Saints if they want to make the playoffs. Since the 1990 playoff format was put in place, only 12 per cent of teams that open O-2 have made the playoffs. If the Saints go O-3, it is over as they are at Green Bay next week. Last year, the Chiefs lost to the Lions and Bills by lopsided scores. This year, they have lost to Atlanta and the Bills again by lopsided scores. With the Saints reeling, the Chiefs will pay the price. Saints cover.

1:00 PM Sunday, September 23, 2012

Detroit (-3.0)
@
Tennessee
Schultz Picks: Detroit

World Picks: 89.8% - Detroit
DET 41 TEN 44 Tennessee Wins
Your Pick:

The Lions are due for a breakout game. Calvin Johnson has only eight catches so far this season and averages seven yards per catch. Tennessee has its star problems, too. Chris Johnson, who had 2,009 yards in 2010, has 21 yards in two games this year, averaging 1.1 yards per carry. Who will have the breakout game? Calvin Johnson! Detroit covers.

1:00 PM Sunday, September 23, 2012

Jacksonville
@
Indianapolis (-3.0)
Schultz Picks: Indianapolis

World Picks: 82.9% - Indianapolis
JAC 22 IND 17 Jacksonville Wins
Your Pick:

The Jaguars had a tough test against the Texans and it showed in the numbers for Jacksonville QB Blaine Gabbert. He had only 53 yards passing and a total of 117 yards overall. His offence should have more success against the Colts defense, but, can he outplay Andrew Luck? The first overall pick is going to get better and better as the season moves on. At home, looking for their second victory, I think the Colts get it. Colts cover

1:00 PM Sunday, September 23, 2012

Cincinnati
@
Washington (-3.5)
Schultz Picks: Washington

World Picks: 67.6% - Washington
CIN 38 WSH 31 Cincinnati Wins
Your Pick:

This is the home opener for the Redskins so big energy advantage for Washington. Two key injuries of concern, Brian Orakpo and Adam Carrikar are out for the year and that's very significant as both are in the defensive seven and sometimes line up side-by-side. But I can't help but think Robert Griffin III will have a great day. If Brandon Weeden can throw for 322 yards, so can Griffin. I thought Michael Vick was the fastest and most athletic QB I had ever seen. It's early, but they have to be one better in his own division, the NFC East. Redskins cover

4:05 PM Sunday, September 23, 2012

Philadelphia (-4.5)
@
Arizona
Schultz Picks: Arizona

World Picks: 51.0% - Arizona
PHI 6 ARI 27 Arizona Wins
Your Pick:

How the Eagles can be 2-0 after giving up four turnovers is amazing. If they are to win in Arizona, they will have to have a good game from the offensive line. Both at centre and left tackle, they are inconsistent. With the Cardinals, they are still hard to read. Two good wins that could have been two losses if the opposition made just one more play. They are young at both tackle positions and QB is still open for debate. But they play hard and with this being their home opener, you know they will play hard again this week. If Arizona wins they will move to 3-0 and that has not happened since 1974. Arizona gets it done!

4:05 PM Sunday, September 23, 2012

Atlanta
@
San Diego (-3.0)
Schultz Picks: Atlanta

World Picks: 63.0% - Atlanta
ATL 27 SD 3 Atlanta Wins
Your Pick:

I am trying not to get seduced after seeing the Falcons beat Denver on Monday night. In the same way, the Chargers are 2-O for the first time under Norv Turner. I doubt that Philip Rivers will throw three first quarter interceptions to set up points as Peyton Manning did last week but this will also be the best QB and receiver combination the Chargers have faced this season. I can see a lot of points as Atlanta has depth issues in the secondary and San Diego has a limited pass rush. In the end, it may be the team with the ball last will win in the end. Take the Falcons.

4:25 PM Sunday, September 23, 2012

Houston (-2.0)
@
Denver
Schultz Picks: Denver

World Picks: 65.8% - Houston
HOU 31 DEN 25 Houston Wins
Your Pick:

Maybe the best defence that Peyton Manning plays all year. On the road in Jacksonville, Houston held the Jaguars to 117 total yards and QB Blaine Gabbert to 53 yards passing. Now I know there is no comparison between Gabbert and Manning but over two games, the Texans have only allowed 17 points. The Texans have never beaten Manning on the road (O-9 while in Indy) and they lost last year's game at Indy to the back-up QB. But I think after the interceptions Manning threw in Atlanta, he will come out with one of his best games back home. Late in the fourth quarter against Atlanta, Manning was at his best. I think he will be at his best all game long this week. Both teams have great edge pass rushers, but Denver has Ryan Clady and 0rlando Franklin as edge rush blockers. Denver moves to 2-1.

4:25 PM Sunday, September 23, 2012

Pittsburgh (-4.5)
@
Oakland
Schultz Picks: Pittsburgh

World Picks: 91.1% - Pittsburgh
PIT 31 OAK 34 Oakland Wins
Your Pick:

Oakland may never see the ball. Over the last two games, the Steelers have averaged 35 minutes in time of possession. Against Denver, Pittsburgh had two 14-play drives for 80 and 75 yards. Against the Jets, they had an 11-play drive for 80 yards and another 14-play drive 75 yards. The Raiders may never see the ball. Steelers cover.

8:20 PM Sunday, September 23, 2012

New England
@
Baltimore (-2.5)
Schultz Picks: Baltimore

World Picks: 61.8% - Baltimore
NE 30 BAL 31 New England Wins
Your Pick:

This one will be close in that the last five games between these two teams have been decided by three points. I anticipate a better game from Joe Flacco and the no-huddle offence. It's tough to run on the road but much easier at home. Speaking of home, you have to go all the way back to the 2001 season to record an Opening Day loss at home for the Ravens. Shakes the confidence a bit. If I am the Ravens, I am going to take this one personal. Last year, they could have and should have won in New England. Make it a major revenge game in evey way possible. I think both QBs will bring their 'A' game , but I think the Ravens are tougher and the Patriots know it. Take the Ravens.

8:30 PM Monday, September 24, 2012

Green Bay (-3.0)
@
Seattle
Schultz Picks: Green Bay

World Picks: 80.9% - Green Bay
GB 12 SEA 14 Seattle Wins
Your Pick:

We need a little perspective here. You open a game with a fumble on a kick-off, followed by a blocked punt. The Seahawks are not going to win that way again. One thing I do realize though is Seattle does have an excellent secondary; all around 6'2" and all heavy hitters and good tacklers. That battle between the Packer receivers and Seahawks cover specialists will be a joy to watch and game determining. Green bay has to stop Marshawn Lynch and if they do, its on Russell Wilson. So far so good, but we will find out even more on Monday night! Packers cover.
